Thadiyantavide Nazeer and 12 others, who have been sentenced to life by the NIA special court in the Kashmir terror recruitment case, were shifted to Poojappura Central Prison on Saturday.

The NIA special court in Kochi had pronounced the verdict on Friday. The convicts were brought to the jail in the afternoon, and have been lodged at the high security blocks in the jail. According to jail sources, each convict has been housed in separate cells with other inmates.

The blocks will be under round-the-clock vigil and electronic surveillance.

Security measures in the prison had been stepped up based on a report of the three-member panel comprising the home secretary, state police chief and the DGP (prisons). The recent jail-break by ripper Jayanandan had in effect exposed the flaws in jail security.

Of the 34 recommendations submitted by the panel, the government approved 18 and issued an order on September 3 to implement the approved recommendations.

It is learnt that the court has asked the jail authorities to observe the mental transformation of the convicts and give them all facilities to learn about the basic factors of the Constitution, as well as socialism and secularism.
