The BJP Tuesday said it was not in a position to form a government in Delhi where it emerged the single largest party and was ready for fresh elections to the 70-member assembly.

"Considering the present situation, we are not in a position to form the government. We are ready for re-poll," the party's chief ministerial candidate Harsh Vardhan told reporters here.

A party source told IANS: "Even the possibility of forming a minority government seems bleak. We have no option left."

Former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Nitin Gadkari, who was in charge of the poll campaign in the state, told the newly-elected legislators to prepare for fresh polls after elections threw up a hung assembly, party sources said.

"Don't consider yourself as MLAs but as candidates," a source quoted Gadkari as telling the legislators after the party finished with 31 seats in the 70-member assembly.

The sources told IANS that Gadkari said the party was not keen to win over legislators from other parties to cobble a majority in the house.

Gadkari, Harsh Vardhan and Delhi unit chief Vijay Goel had explored the possibility of forming the government in the legislative board meeting.

After the meeting, which was attended by all the 70 candidates who fought the poll, Goel told reporters: "Instead of trying for a coalition, we would rather sit in the opposition."

He asked the Aam Aadmi Party to form the government if it can prove its majority. The Aam Aadmi Party won 28 seats while the Congress got only eight.

BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad also said the party "was in no hurry to form a government".

Asked if the party would approach other parties or legislators for support, Prasad said the question was "hypothetical".

"Any process of forming a government has not started in Delhi. As of now, we don't have a majority," he said.

On the AAP, Prasad said: "We congratulate them for their performance in Delhi, but what kind of arrogance they have. They say both Congress and BJP are corrupt."
