The CPM Politburo has distanced itself from the letter that V S Achuthanandan wrote to Ommen Chandy backing a demand for CBI inquiry into the conspiracy behind the murder of TP Chandrasekharan.

Following a meeting, the politburo said that the move by the opposition leader in Kerala was a wrong one and added that it does not agree with the stance of the party. The party also rejected VS' demand for a high-level probe into the matter.

The CPM's official stance is that a CBI probe is unwarranted. The official stance was announced by the party following an Available PB meet. Prakash Karat, national Secretary of the party had earlier said that the party would discuss the contents of the letter that was written by VS to the CM.

The letter had in fact put the party on the defensive because it overtly supported a demand by KK Rama, widow of TP Chandrasekharan, whose murder allegedly had the blessings of the CPM. Earlier, the party had censured the senior leader for his open support to Rama. With his new letter, VS has lent credence to the demand and would also strengthen any government move to order a CBI probe into the matter.
