The Special Court on Monday criticised the Vithura sex scandal victim for making unreasonable excuses for delaying the commencement of the trial in the case. While considering the plea of the victim who sought a month’s time to turn up before the court, Justice S Shajahan observed that the court, counsels and the prosecution could not waste their time unnecessarily. While the trial in the case was to commence on Monday, the victim’s counsel S Aheez produced a medical certificate on behalf of the victim secured from a Homeo doctor hailing from Thiruvananthapuram and sought a month’s time for the victim to appear before the court. The court said that it was not satisfied with the medical certificate produced by the victim. However, the court sanctioned a week’s time “considering natural justice” for the victim. Meanwhile, the court observed that by delaying the case indefinitely, the victim has made a mockery of the judiciary. “Like the victim, the accused also deserve justice from the court,” Justice Shajahan observed. The victim has been asked to appear before the court on August 19 for the commencement of the trial. The court had scheduled the trial of as many as 15 cases out of a total 23 cases that were charged in connection with the sex scandal. While one case was disposed, seven cases are pending at the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court-II, Ernakulam, for completion of proceedings before it would be send to the Special Court in Kottayam. The case that was disposed was charged against actor Jagathy Sreekumar. However, an appeal has been filed in the High Court against the acquittal.
